Two African American women embracing. Defeating powerlessness

How to Defeat Powerlessness

The first time I ever shed tears at work, I was working as an aide in a hospital, pulled to another floor expected to do double the work due to the lack of proper staffing. I promptly refused, and one of the nurses promptly called the supervisor who threatened to have my job if I did not comply.

Long story short, I complied. The tears were not for the lack of understanding from the nurse, how rude the supervisor was, or even the lack of conflict resolution and leadership skills that were present. Rather, the tears were attributed to a feeling of powerlessness that goes against every natural part of the human body. I knew I didn’t have to stay, but I needed the money- that’s what I told myself anyway.

One of the first things that The Creator gave man was dominion over all the earth. The source for every human being’s desire to have control over their lives and their circumstances comes directly from this mandate.

What do you do when the vision for your life does not match your reality? When where you are in life is not where you want to be and you know you’re capable of so much more.

This was my internal conflict and a conflict of most people who are working towards a better and greater life for themselves and their families. Let me share with you how I then and even now survive the “now” of life.

1. Focus on the Now

You may not be where you want to be but you’re not where you use to be, and that shows progress. Always keep your vision, your goals, and your dreams in mind, but don’t live there. Live in the present. The challenges and experiences you face today are what’s gonna help shape and mold you into that unstoppable beast tomorrow.

Whether it’s challenging in your career, your finances, or your marriage, take every challenge head-on. Time is gonna add to your skills and your wisdom, so as you journey through life consider focusing on “now”. Make the most of your days and enjoy them despite the ups and downs that life is bound to come with. Let your vision motivate you, but don’t neglect the “now” of life.

2. Open Your Mouth

Words are a very powerful thing. They can shape your world. Remember from your thoughts come words, and whatever you repeatedly think about you become. You may not be where you want to be in life or doing what you would like to be doing yet, but you should always keep a heart and a mind of faith that it will come to pass. One of the ways to do this is to repeatedly say your desires aloud.

3. Know Thyself

When you know who you are, you’re able to be self-confident and bold. When you truly know, the realization of “now” doesn’t phase you because you know your purpose. You know what you’re capable of and you know where you are going in life.

When others don’t see your greatness you’re still able to stand tall staying committed to your goals and vision.  Know that your emotions aren’t you, and you can overcome every feeling of hopelessness and powerlessness by staying true to who you are and knowing thyself at thy core. Focus on what The Creator says about you and what you know to be true, not what others say.

4. Keep Going

The most important aspect of this all is to not give up. Find your source of encouragement and let your dream fuel you to a better life, but don’t stop progressing. When you think you’ve lost your ability to go on think again. Think about who’s counting on you to succeed. Find out how to move past failure here.

Think of yourself as a pot of soup. And everything you go through in life, the challenges, the disappointments, the setbacks, are just ingredients being added to you in the pot. The more ingredients, the better the soup tastes.

Now, even with those ingredients in the pot, in order for it to really be flavorful, it needs to cook and simmer for some time. Not everyone’s time is the same, so as you’re waiting, keep the faith and hope in your heart. Speak your future into existence and enjoy the now in life.

Until Next Time With Love,
