6 Easy Ways to Stop Wasting Your Time

The older I get, the more I realize Time Truly Is Money.

Time is the greatest resource that evens out the playing field. It’s the one thing you can never get back, and if you’re not careful it can slip right through your hands like sand in an hourglass.

Time stops for no one, and as humans, we never know when our time will be up. Meanwhile, we have the tendency to treat each day as if we’ll live forever.

We put things off, we argue over trivial things, and we overthink when we should make haste.

How tragic it is to find that an entire lifetime is wasted in pursuit of distractions while purpose is neglected.

6 ways to stop wasting your time hourglass

1. Plan to Win

You know the saying, those who fail to plan, plan to fail. This is reality.

#1 step to stop wasting your time, is to manage your time.

Don’t just run through what you’re going to do in your head, but actually develop a plan.

Daily, weekly, and monthly plans translate into yearly goals. Make your plans based on goals you actually want to accomplish and complete.

Likewise, being successful in life takes strategy. For now, let’s focus on daily planning.

  • Start planning before your week starts.
  • Plan for your days off.
  • Make sure you’re utilizing your time for growth, self-improvement, and personal development.
  • Don’t neglect self-care. Read my 5 Surprising Ways to Feel Good About Yourself.
  • Incorporate your values. (for example: you value your health, so schedule your workout hours in)

People who often feel there’s not enough time in the day, have no schedule, trying to tackle the day blindfolded.

Remember STRATEGY.

For each activity, you plan, be specific about the amount of time you’ll need to accomplish your tasks. Be realistic and don’t forget to include breaks, time for cooking and eating, and even schedule how many hours you sleep.

Most importantly, the goal is for you to be deliberate. Transform your schedule into a stepping stone that will lead you to success.

2. Make Haste

Now that you have your schedule down.

# 2 major key is to act swiftly and promptly.

Do not have that inner conversation where you tell yourself you have time to do the task later. That’s how opportunities are missed because you failed to prepare.

This is the follow-through portion. Hence, it’s one thing to plan, it’s another to actually follow through.

Don’t waste your time and cut into other, more pleasurable activities that you’ve already planned for later in the day. Do what you have to do when you have to do it.

This will allow you to do what you want to do in the near future, it’s a compromise.

Procrastination is one of the major killers of success, and a roadblock to reaching your goals. The truth is there will never be a perfect time, do what you need to do anyway.

3. Kill Social Media

Kill social media. Well, maybe not kill it, but limit its use definitely. You can easily tell yourself (I know from personal experience) let me just check this one notification, and 3 hours later you’re still smiling and scrolling blissfully.

This is a major time thief, especially if you don’t use social media for business or marketing purposes, just to socialize.

It’s great having the access to connect with people worldwide and keep up with the Jones’s, but know how much time you’re spending on these sites, and be able to haul yourself away when needed.

Or you’ll be on Pinterest for 6 hours, almost half the day gone and not even know it.

4. Make Arguing Non-existent

Make arguing nonexistent. Arguing is never worth anyone’s time.

  • Know when to walk away from a conversation.
  • Know when to compromise.
  • Be able to pick sense from nonsense.
  • Keep it moving.
  • Don’t react . . . ACT.

Most importantly, don’t be labeled as a fool because you can’t keep your emotions in check. It’s never that deep to get out of character.

Royalty doesn’t argue. Royalty doesn’t do Tit for Tat. And that’s what you are, Royalty.

Similarly, the lack of effective communication is found at the root of this issue. Well, that and ignorance.

Either way, be aware that not only are we living in this world together, we’re also awaiting death together as well, and no one knows when they will be called home. So make peace !

5. Stop Worrying

How many things do we worry about that we cannot change? Almost everything you worry about will never come to pass or you have no control over it. Sorry to break it to you. But, there’s good news . . .

The best way to stop overthinking is to tell yourself to stop overthinking.

Remember that you control your mind, your mind doesn’t control you.

Also remember the mind, just like the body loves repetition. Think muscle memory.

To illustrate, if you’re a chronic worrier, over-thinker, or over-analyzer, realize it’s going to take some time. You’re going to have to tell yourself over and over “I’m not doing this right now, I’m not thinking of these thoughts any longer.”

Shut it down and close up shop. You’re only serving yourself thoughts that are good, thoughts that are pure, thoughts that are lovely.

Consequently, it takes time. In our world of instant technology, this is the one thing, changing the mind, that takes much-guided patience.

6. Don’t Overbook

Don’t overbook yourself. This is major because I myself have fallen victim countless times. You liked how I used victim right? You want to be nice and say yes when someone asks you to do something or show up somewhere, especially if you can get something in return.

You may be in a good mood at the time, the weather is nice, the sun is shining, circumstances are right. Then, when the time comes to fulfill your end of the bargain, your mood has changed, whatever you said you were gonna do, you don’t want to do it anymore. You’re annoyed and are now brainstorming excuses.

Before you obligate yourself, your services, or your time to anyone or anything, make sure you’re proof positive it’s something you’re capable of doing and something YOU actually want to do and will follow through on.

The Moral of the Story

Respect your time and look at it as an investment. Everything you do and everyone who you allow to gain a moment of your time will ultimately take a piece of your life you will never get back.

Make the most of it. Live, don’t just exist. The world needs you, the best version of you. So show up.
